What Is 304 Stainless Steel—and Why Use It for Litter Boxes?

304 stainless steel · Material guide · Care

“Stainless steel” describes a family of alloys, not one identical material. Grade 304 is widely used because it combines corrosion resistance, cleanability, strength and a refined finish for normal indoor environments.

What the number 304 tells you

Grade 304 is an austenitic stainless steel commonly used in kitchens, food-processing equipment and household products. Chromium helps form a protective passive film at the surface; nickel supports the alloy’s structure and corrosion performance.

It is inaccurate to call every 304 product “marine grade”. In highly salty, chloride-rich environments, 316 is generally the better-known marine choice. A household litter tray is a different, regularly cleaned indoor application.

Why it works for a litter tray

  • Cleanability: the smooth surface rinses and wipes readily.
  • Corrosion resistance: it resists ordinary rusting in typical indoor use.
  • Durability: it handles repeated cleaning without becoming brittle.
  • Appearance: the finish stays neutral and easy to integrate at home.

Not all construction is equal

Grade is only part of quality. Surface finish, edge treatment, joins, wall stability and the way plastic components attach all affect daily use. Barely There designs the complete box around cat comfort, mess control and an easy cleaning routine—not just a steel specification.

Protect the surface

Use warm water, mild detergent and a soft cloth. Avoid steel wool, carbon-steel tools and harsh abrasives. Rinse away residue and dry the tray before adding fresh litter. See our stainless steel litter box cleaning guide for the full routine.

Frequently asked questions

Can 304 stainless steel rust?

It has excellent resistance to ordinary rusting, but no stainless steel is invulnerable. Chlorides, contamination from other metals, harsh chemicals and neglected deposits can cause staining or corrosion.

Is 304 stainless steel safe around cats?

It is widely used for household and food-contact products. As with any litter box, keep the finished product clean, inspect it for damage and use cleaners safely.
